Daniil Kvyat has said his ninth place finish in the Formula 1 season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a nice way to finish the season.
Kvyat managed to score points in three of the last five Grand Prix, but could have increased that to four, had he not received a 10 second penalty for causing a collision at the end of the Mexican Grand Prix.
The Russian driver didn’t have a great start to the final weekend of the season, qualifying 14th on the grid for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but he put together an impressive opening stint which got him in to the points at the end of the race, with the Toro Rosso driver finishing in ninth place, ahead of the McLaren of Carlos Sainz, and the result secured sixth place in the constructors’ championship for Toro Rosso.
“Today was a nice way to finish the season.” commented Kvyat after the race.
“That first stint on the Base tyre was probably the best stint of my life, I pushed like there was no tomorrow!
“Every lap I was quicker than the cars around me and I had a great feeling with the car. It worked out exactly as we had planned it, our strategy was fantastic and we had a good setup for the race.”
Kvyat didn’t feel like he had extracted the maximum from his car in recent races, with Toro Rosso showing strong pace towards the end of the year, and so he was happy he could finish 2019 with a good performance.
“Maybe we sacrificed Qualifying a bit yesterday but we managed to put everything together today.
“I felt I left something on the table in the last couple of races, so I wanted to close the season with a really good race, to finish the year the way I did is a great feeling.”
