Mercedes has ended the first day of the opening pre-season Formula 1 test as the fastest team, with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas topping the times.

Bottas was fastest in the morning session, but Hamilton took over for the afternoon and set a best time of 1m16.976s to go fastest, 0.399s ahead of his team-mate.

It was a productive day for the world champions as Hamilton completing 94 laps, making the team’s total lap count 173 for the day, with the Briton’s best time coming on the harder C2 compound tyre.

Sergio Perez’s time for the morning remained good enough for third, while Max Verstappen improved from the morning to set a best time of 1m17.516s, although he did have two harmless spins during the afternoon.

Daniil Kvyat improved significantly in his AlphaTauri and ended the first day fifth fastest, completing 115 laps for the day, while Carlos Sainz racked up 161 laps in his McLaren, setting a best time of 1m17.842s to go sixth.

Daniel Ricciardo took over from Esteban Ocon for the afternoon in the new Renault RS20 and was seventh fastest on the C2 compound, just 0.131s ahead of his team-mate’s best effort in the morning, which was set on the softer C3 tyres.

George Russell’s time in his Williams remained good enough for ninth fastest, and the Racing Point of Lance Stroll rounded out the top ten as he set a best time of 1m18.282s whilst completing 50 laps.

Charles Leclerc had a quiet day in the Ferrari, only ending up 11th fastest, and the Monegasque driver completed 131 laps, although was some way short of Verstappen’s total lap count.

Nicholas Latifi was a further tenth behind as he got to grips with his new Williams.

The Canadian driver managed to complete 63 laps in his FW43 in what will be a welcome relief to Williams after their torrid time at the same test last year.

Antonio Giovinazzi took over from Robert Kubica in the Alfa Romeo for the afternoon, but ended the day slowest of all with a time of 1m20.096s, some 1.63s off the Haas of Kevin Magnussen in 14th.
