Pascal Wehrlein has announced he has left the Mahindra FE Team and is believed to be heading to Porsche.
Wehrlein said on his Instagram story: “Hi everyone, from today onwards I will no longer be part of Mahindra Racing. My interest was to finish the season but the current situation didn’t allow so.
“I can’t say much but will keep you informed. Thank you for all your support and see you soon on track again.”
Wehrlein was signed on for the 2020/21 season by Mahindra asked to be released from his contract with immediate effect.
The Race reported the story earlier today and have said that Wehrlein will be racing for Porsche in Season 7.
Wehrlein will replace Porsche factory driver Neel Jani who has been with the team from the very beginning but has looked out of sorts in the shortened Season 6.
Compared to experienced teammate Andre Lotterer who has taken a podium and frequently qualified in superpole, Jani has scored no points all season.
Jani is expected to complete the remaining closed door races in Season 6 which is set to take place in Berlin Tempelhof Airfield in August but Wehrlein is believed not to be.
Eyes now look to who will be the late call up for Mahindra with Felix Rosenqvist being the previous star driver for the team who filled in for Wehrlein at the start of Season 5 due to his Mercedes commitments.
But with him being in the US focussing on IndyCar for Chip Ganassi, they would most likely not be able to call on him.
The move to Porsche would likely allow an involvement in other Porsche activities with Porsche eyeing up an LMDH entry despite having cut funding for their IMSA GT entry.
Wehrlein came second in the Formula E Race at Home challenge losing out to Stoffel Vandoorne in the finale after being tagged round at the start of the race.
