Merhi rejoins Eurasia Motorsport for team’s FIA WEC debut at 6H Spa

Roberto Merhi will rejoin the Eurasia Motorsport LMP2 squad as the team prepare to make their debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

The former F1 driver has competed with the team before in the Asian Le Mans Series in 2019, having claimed three podiums and a pole position in amongst his four outings.

The Eurasia Motorsport team announced their FIA WEC debut in the passing months, announcing their driver crew for their #35 Ligier JSP217 Gibson; Nick Cassidy was originally scheduled to race as their third driver but had Super GT priorities at Suzuka.

The team have raced at Spa in the past, but this will be their first time in LMP2 machinery.

Nobuya Yamanaka of Japan and Daniel Gaunt of New Zealand, Merhi’s teammates, will be using the 6 Hours of Spa as part of their preparations for the (delayed) 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Spaniard himself said: “I am really looking forward to joining the team again in Europe and it will be great to race once again in the FIA WEC and in Spa.

“I finished in the podium in 2016 so I am long overdue an LMP2 return to such a great venue and series”, referring to his 2016-17 WEC LMP2 runs for the CEFC Manor TRS Racing team.

Mark Goddard, Team Principal at Eurasia Motorsport, said: “We look forward to welcoming Roberto back into the car.

“He was very quick in Asia, an environment that was quite new to him and showed his quality with pole position in Shanghai and on top of that he was a really nice guy to have around the team, so will be a good asset to help Nobuya and Dan get to grips with the car and track which will be new to them.”

The 6 Hours of Spa, on August 15, will allow the team to fight amongst a competitive LMP2 field of 24 cars and iron out any practical issues before the Le Mans 24 in September.
