Horner: Getting a podium would do wonders for Albon

Red Bull Racing Team Principal, Christian Horner has said that getting a Formula 1 podium would do wonders for Alex Albon’s confidence.

Albon has come under pressure in recent weeks, after being constantly out-performed by his team-mate Max Verstappen.

The 24-year-old started in sixth position, last time out in the Spanish Grand Prix putting him in prime position to get a strong result and quieten his critics, but he struggled to find grip on any tyre compound and ended up finishing the race down in eighth.

But despite Albon’s difficult start to the season, Horner has backed his driver to prove his critics wrong, stating that his racecraft is impressive and that is a strong quality Red Bull looks for in a driver.

“He is growing in experience and more confident with his feedback in what he feels the car is doing.” Horner said in his latest Red Bull column.

“If you look at his race performances for the past 12 months, they have been great and he impresses us every week with his ballsy overtakes, that is something we have always looked for in our drivers and he certainly has what it takes.”

Although Albon has come under fire for not matching Verstappen’s performance, he could arguably have fought for the race win in the opening Grand Prix of the season in Austria had he not collided with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

It was not the first time the pair made contact when racing for a podium position, with Hamilton colliding into Albon at the penultimate race last season in Brazil when the pair were fighting for third position.
The form displayed in those two races by Albon shows he does have the capability to finish on the podium and Horner believes that if Albon can get a top three finish, it will take his performances to a new level.
“Lewis has been his nemesis in terms of a podium in Brazil and even a victory in Austria in the first race this year and to get one of these under his belt would have done wonders for his confidence.”
