Scuderia AlphaTauri Team Principal, Franz Tost has hinted that Yuki Tsunoda could be candidate for a seat at the team next season.
The 20-year-old Japanese driver currently races for Carlin in the Formula 2 Championship and sits in fourth place in the driver standings on 82 points.
Tsunoda has shown excellent development so far this season, with an impressive points haul in recent rounds.
He picked up first place in round five’s sprint race and fourth in both of round six’s sprint and feature race.
He has also secured pole position in qualifying at Spa with a lap time of 1m57.593s.
As a result, the Red Bull junior driver’s performances have attracted attention from Franz Tost and asked whether he is impressed with Tsunoda, Tost responded: “I’m not only impressed with his driving in Formula Two, I was impressed with him last year in Formula Three as well and the years before.
“He is a high skilled driver and he has all the ingredients together to become a successful Formula One driver.
“For sure, he will test for us in Abu Dhabi at the young driver test.
“Whether he will drive for us next year or not, this is being decided by Red Bull and it depends also whether he gets a Super Licence.
“If he continues like now then he will be within the first three or four drivers in the Formula Two championship and it shouldn’t be a problem to receive the Super Licence and then the rest we will see.”
Competition for a seat in a Formula One car is fierce, with many of the driver decisions for the 2021 season already being made by teams and so Tsunoda needs to continue with his good form in order to secure a seat next year.
Testing at Abu Dhabi with AlphaTauri will be an excellent opportunity for the young driver and if he can demonstrate his skills in a Formula 1 car it will boost his chance to obtain a place in the team for 2021.
If he does get a seat at the team for 2021, it is likely that he will replace Daniil Kvyat.
