Renault can now go to Monza with a lot of confidence after their strong result in Spa, according to Daniel Ricciardo.
The Enstone-based team had their best points haul since their return to Formula 1 as a manufacturer after Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon finished fourth and fifth, with Ricciardo scoring an extra point having set the fastest lap of the race.
Renault have always been strong around low downforce circuits and last year, had their strongest performance at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, and after Sunday’s performance at Spa, Ricciardo believes they can now head there with a lot of confidence.
“What a race and definitely an excellent result for the team.” said Ricciardo after the race.
“We had a lot of pace today and fourth is a strong result.”
“This was a good track for us last year and Monza was even better.
“We’ll see what happens, but we can go there with a lot of confidence.”
Ricciardo secured the fastest lap on the final lap of the race and having found half a second to secure it, the Australian felt it was probably better than his lap in qualifying on Saturday.
“It’s been a while since I’ve had the fastest lap of the race, so that was also nice.
“My engineer told me what the current fastest was and I thought ‘I got this’! It was a proper big lap; I used all the track and went for it.
“Maybe it was better than my qualifying lap yesterday!”
Although Ricciardo crossed the line in fourth, he was 10 seconds behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen at the end of the race, but he felt he could have probably stuck with his former teammate had he not fallen behind Sergio Perez and Pierre Gasly after the pitstop during the safety car period.
