Renault hoping to score big points in Italy

Renault are hoping to score big points in the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, after achieving their best result of the season last weekend at Spa.

The RP20 excelled around the low downforce circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, with Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon crossing the line fourth and fifth in last weekend’s Grand Prix.

Ricciardo also managed to secure the fastest lap of the race on the final tour of the circuit, and the additional point scored as a result meant it was Renault’s best result since they returned to the series as a manufacturer.

The low downforce nature of the circuit seemed to really suit Renault’s car, a trend that became apparent last season when the team had their best results at both Spa and Monza, and with that in mind, they are hoping they can repeat that form this weekend.

In theory, Monza should suit the Renault more than Spa, with the circuit requiring even less downforce, and Renault Chief Race Engineer, Ciaron Pilbeam is hoping they can score strong points again, especially as they are now in a fight for third in the constructors’ championship.

“We were competitive in Spa, and we’re hoping for another good weekend.” commented Pilbeam.

“We were competitive in Monza last year, finishing fourth and fifth, and we have just seen again that the car is good on lower downforce.

“If we can put together another weekend like the last one we hope to score some good points.”

Ocon is also hopeful of a good result, and hopes his performances previously around the Italian circuit will continue.

“Monza is a really fun track. I have good memories from there back in 2017, when I started the race from third after qualifying fifth in the rain.” added the 23-year-old.

“I had a good race fighting with the Ferraris, which was nice.

“In 2018, I qualified quite well in eighth and ended up sixth in the race, which was also a great result.

“My years in Monza have been decent and I’m going there with the aim of replicating Spa. That’s the target.

“Our performance in Spa shows we’re capable of some good things and the similar track characteristics means we should be in a good position to get strong points.”
