Pierre Gasly took his maiden Formula 1 win today at the Italian Grand Prix, and was initially lost for words before going on to express his passion for the sport.
Gasly had taken the lead after a red flag was issued and Lewis Hamilton fell to the back of the pack as a result of being handed a ten-second stop/go penalty.
He was put under immense pressure for the rest of the race by Carlos Sainz in the McLaren, but managed to hold him off to cross the finish line first.
After the race he spoke to Sky F1, struggling to put his feelings into words. He said: “Honestly it’s unbelievable.
“I’m not realising what’s happening right now. It was such a crazy race and then we capitalised on the red flag.
“I have got no words. I have no words and this team has done so much for me.
“They gave me my first opportunity in F1, they gave me my first podium, now they are giving me my first win. It’s just an amazing day.”
Gasly also referenced the difficulties he has faced during his short Formula One career and reflected on his passion to excel in the sport. “It’s amazing. I’m lost for words for what has just happened to us.
“It’s unbelievable. I’ve been through so much in the space of 18 months and it’s better than anything I expected.
“I’m not someone that gives up on anything. My drive to be better, to be stronger is so strong. I literally gave everything I had.
“I wanted that win so much and now we have done it and it still feels weird to say that.”
Gasly first entered Formula One racing for Toro Rosso and was then moved up to Red Bull after excellent performances. He was only there briefly, being replaced by Alex Albon mid-season and relegated back to Toro Rosso which then became Alpha Tauri.
Appearing on the podium after the race to collect his trophy and champagne, the French driver was visibly stunned and took a moment on the top step to contemplate his achievement. His disbelief was obvious when he gave a few shakes of his head as he looked around him.
He has received much praise this season for his exceptional form, and the win today is a well-deserved culmination of his hard work and dedication. It certainly suggests that there is much more to come from this driver.
