Mike Conway of the #7 Toyota GAZOO Racing shared his thoughts approaching the 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The team aims to join the likes of Audi and Porsche in claiming a hat-trick of Le Mans wins (in the WEC era), thus putting themselves in line for the Le Mans 24 Hours Grand Trophy.
In their last two Le Mans outings the Toyota GAZOO Racing LMP1 team have broken their curse (five potential chances for a win) by taking two victories in the #8 car.
Conway of the #7 said: “I’m tired of coming second at Le Mans – I’ve done it three times already so the only target this year for the #7 car is to win.”
The #7’s winning intentions last year were halted by a slow puncture issue in the hands of Jose Maria Lopez.
The Argentinian had to make two unscheduled pit stops for tyre changes and an electronic reset on the car’s systems.
In 2017, the #7 car suffered a mechanical issue only 10 hours into the race and caught on fire with Kamui Kobayashi behind the wheel.
Conway continued: “Le Mans is such a special race because of all the history and how hard it is to win.
“It’s only once a year and it’s the team’s main focus when they build the car.
“So everything is for Le Mans and it is constantly on our mind through the whole season.
“Last year we were unlucky but we have another big chance this season; the TS050 Hybrid is a great car with two great driver line-ups.
“As always, we have got to execute our race and make the right decisions.”
