Marcus Gronholm will join the Projekt E grid at Spa.
Gronholm will race round three of the all-electric rallycross series, Projekt E, at the World RX of Benelux on 21-22 November.
The two-time World Rally Champion will be driving the Ferratum Team’s Ford Fiesta ERX car which was raced by Janis Baumanis at the previous round.
Gronholm is not only a double World Rally Champion but also team principle of the GRX Taneco World RX team which his son, Niclas Gronholm, is one of the drivers.
The Finnish driver competed in the RallyX Nordic legends race in Holjes earlier this year, his first competitive outing since he retired in 2012.
Gronholm has recently testes the Ferratum Team’s Fiesta and had this to say, “I drove a total of three laps, so I’m well trained! I haven’t been the biggest fan of electric cars to be honest, but when I drove this car, inside the cockpit the enthusiasm really surfaced. The car behaves very well and is very impressive.”
“I have said at home that I will no longer drive in races. But, while I’m in this situation where I will race in Belgium, I’m not going to get into any big fights, and this is certainly not a comeback. I’m getting involved to feel what these electric cars are like, as rallycross is going in that direction anyway.”
Ferratum Team manager Jani Paasonen, also a rallycross driver, had this to say about Gronholm being in the car, “When Marcus puts on a helmet, he will definitely run for victory. I think he will take care of the job. It’s really big for us that a two-time World Rally Champion and a round winner of the European Rallycross Championship will drive a Ferratum Team car. It’s also a big deal that Ferratum Team is the first WRX team to be involved in the electric car class in the World Championship series.
