George Russell qualified in 13th for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after another phenomenal Saturday performance in his Williams.
Outqualifying teammates is part and parcel for Russell in Formula 1 and low and behold he put Nicholas Latifi to shade once again. His fastest time was nearly seven tenths quicker than Latifi’s was.
Russell spoke after the session about how much he was enjoying the weekend so far: “I am really pleased with that qualifying session. It was a proper thrill out there today, we need to come to more tracks like this because it is exhilarating for the driver, pushing the car right to the limit.”
Russell said on the team radio during Q2 how much he enjoyed the track: “Great job guys. That was a good lap. A nice lap. We need more tracks like this in F1, because this is f****** awesome”
Russell also said after the session: “After practice we weren’t sure what others had done with their fuel loads, but we didn’t look so promising and we didn’t expect Q2, so to be in the position that we are in and to qualify P13 is great.
Williams are yet to score a point in 2020 despite frequent qualifying standouts from Russell. Latifi has finished 11th twice in Austria and Monza but still no points.
Time is running out with only five races left to get them off the mark and avoid their first pointless season.
“Tomorrow we want to fight, go forwards and although it will be difficult, I will be getting my elbows out and doing my best.”
Head of vehicle performance, Dave Robson was complimentary of Russell and optimistic for the race: “Each of his [Russell’s] laps this afternoon was strong, and he was genuinely competing for places just outside of the top-10. Q3 was beyond us today, but nonetheless we were more competitive than usual and feel that we have adapted to the short format well.
“Last weekend in Portugal George showed good pace on Sunday and we hope that he can continue that trend tomorrow. We undoubtedly have some strong race cars around us on the grid, but we had a good long run this morning and we believe that we can race hard and put up a strong fight.”
