Vandoorne and Blomqvist FE stars amongst JOTA Sport lineup for 2021 WEC campaign

The JOTA Sport LMP2 team have announced that Stoffel Vandoorne, Tom Blomqvist and Sean Gelael will drive in their 2021 WEC campaign.

As a former F1 star and the most successful GP2 driver/champion, Stoffel Vandoorne will return to Le Mans after his last pursuits for SMP Racing in LMP1.

The current Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E driver raced for SMP Racing in 2019 (SuperSeason) at his home race, the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, followed by the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“To be in the WEC with JOTA is great because they are such an established and respected team in a super competitive environment, which is obviously something I always look to be involved in.”

The latest of Formula E race winners will commence his FE season next month in Saudi Arabia, and is expected to race in two Asian Le Mans Series rounds taking place that month for JOTA.

He will be joined by his “racing friends” Sean Gelael and Tom Blomqvist.

Blomqvist is set to drive for the NIO Formula E team in their upcoming season, and drove for the selected Berlin finale rounds for Panasonic Jaguar Racing as a then-test and development driver for the team.

“Firstly, it’s exciting to get back together with Sean [Gelael] for an attack on an LMP2 title,” he says having last driven an LMP2 car (with Gelael alongside) in the 2016 WEC season for Extreme Speed Motorsports.

He has driven in a range of seats in Formula E, Formula 3, DTM, and his last WEC outfit in the GTE-Pro category for BMW in 2018-19.

“I’d like to say a big thanks to the Gelael family for once again putting their trust in me and also to JOTA for the opportunity to join a top team alongside Stoffel.”

After an extensive career in single-seaters, Asian Le Mans Series, plus a one-off WEC appearance with Blomqvist in 2016, the Indonesian will appear full-time in the 2021 WEC.

“I am happy that I can be part of a great history and hopefully this year I can produce the same results they are having in previous years,” he said.

The 2021 WEC season commences with the Prologue on March 13-14th and then the opening 1000 Miles of Sebring race on 18-19th.
