This week the Virtual GP series loaded up Silverstone for another evening of esports drama and fun.

Weirdly this week Mercedes and Aston Martin didn’t field teams for this weeks race, but the other 8 did provide some slightly changed lineups.

The big name was George Russell returning to the fray after sitting out last week for Williams. He won in the first lockdown series in 2020.

Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman replaced Arthur Leclerc and Marcus Armstrong.

The eSport drivers sprint race resulted in a win for Brendon Leigh ahead of Marcel Keifer. Leigh’s win meant pole for Callum Ilott and Alex Albon will start second.

Alessio Di Cappa put Nicholas Latifi in third.

Alvaro Carreton put George Russell sixth.

Russell and Ilott both got mega starts with Russell up to fourth. Albon fought with Thibaut Courtois for most of the first lap allowing Ilott to disappear up the road on soft tyres.

Russell eventually fought past Courtois and Albon hoping to close down on Ilott on medium tyres.

Ilott was able to hold a gap to Russell and Albon, he pitted earlier due to his soft tyres. He then set about holding the net lead on mediums waiting for the attack from his rivals.

Eventually Albon pitted after he collected a three second penalty and came out behind Ilott. The next lap Russell pitted and was a second behind Albon at exit.

Albon set about using his fresh soft tyres to dispatch Ilott and build a gap to Russell but Ilott put up a good fight allowing Russell to close up.

Ilott on mediums was passed by the soft clad Albon and Russell but managed to stay close. Unfortunately a penalty for himself meant that he was unable to capitalise on Albon’s like Russell was.

Albon and Russell eeked it to the finish with Russell staying in the tracks of Albon until the penultimate lap where he passed Albon.

He hoped to win on track but Albon took him into Stowe at the end to take the win on the road only for Russell to take his fifth Virtual GP win.

Next week the Virtual GP series returns to Interlagos for the newly named Virtual GP de Sau Paulo. Last year an epic duel took place between Charles Leclerc and Alex Albon, judging from today, there could well be another extremely interesting race.
