The first thing I will say about Aprilia is don’t write them off. Aleix Espargaro has looked so comfortable on that Italian bike throughout pre-season and this weekend in Qatar he has been at the front consistently.
The progression the squad looks to have made has took everyone by surprise, so much so that Andrea Dovizioso will test the Aprilia next month, leading to speculation the Italian rider could make a surprise appearance with the team at a 2021 race.
Lorenzo Savadori was confirmed just before pre-season testing as Aprilia’s second rider, but I think the 27-year-old could struggle this year. The Italian looks to be in pain with a shoulder injury picked up during training, and that could be a problem as he tries to get to grips with the 2021 bike.
Aleix Espargaro has plenty of experience on the RS-GP bike, after making his debut with the team in 2017. That experience and length of time building his relationship with Aprilia could pay off this year with a podium or even a race-win.
I think Aprilia Racing could be the dark horses of the 2021 season, and podiums could certainly be on the cards for them this year.
It feels like Aprilia will face another challenging year in 2021. The team propped up the championship standings last year, and that probably won’t change this year. Veteran rider Aleix Espargaro stays with the team, as does Lorenzo Savadori.
Rider continuity should help the team make gains in performance; nevertheless, it will still prove very difficult for both riders to out-perform the bike. The bike lacks top-end power; moreover, it isn’t as rider-friendly as others.
Espargaro is an experienced campaigner; he could snatch some solid points finishes on days when all hell breaks loose. As for Savadori, he’s in for more challenges as he navigates his way through the elite tier of motorcycle racing.
