Gabriel Aubry has joined the Alpine Elf Matmut Endurance Team as the new official reserve driver for their 2021 Hypercar campaign.
The 23-year-old Frenchman won the Asian Le Mans Series LMP3 title in 2018 and raced in LMP2 since with several teams, in the likes of the European Le Mans Series, IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
His two most recent WEC seasons with Jackie Chan DC Racing, now a second JOTA entry, had him secure a personal best Le Mans (class) finish of second. His personal best championship position was also second in the 2018/19 Super-Season.
“I’m really happy to join Alpine, especially for its return to the top-flight category,” he said.
“While Nicolas Lapierre helped me during the rookie tests in Bahrain, I will also reunite with Matthieu [Vaxivière], with whom I scored a podium in the (2021) 24 Hours of Daytona, and André [Negrao], with whom I have fought so hard over the last few years in LMP2.
“I am sure that this experience will help my career in endurance racing while maintaining my driving skills with my LMP2 programmes in FIA WEC and IMSA. It’s now up to all of us to work together and hopefully hear the Marseillaise on August 22!”
Philippe Sinault, Team Principal added: “Gabriel and the team know each other extremely well as we had Formula 4 and LMP2 testing sessions together a few years ago and we always had the desire to work together.
“It is a crucial position, but we do not doubt that he is serious, loyal and committed.”
Alpine will be using a grandfathered Rebellion R13 now as the Alpine A480 Gibson under Hypercar regulations.
