Portuguese Grand Prix: Hamilton takes top spot, Alonso in top 5

Lewis Hamilton takes the top spot of FP2 after an uncertain end to this mornings practise at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Hamilton had work to do after FP1 and that he did as he went fastest in FP2 with a lap time of 1m19.837s. Behind him, despite the broken by wire that caused a pit stop, came the Red Bull of Max Verstappen with a fastest lap time of 1m19.980s.

Valtteri Bottas dropped down two places from FP1 to third place but still stood within the top three. Similarly to FP1, a Ferrari placed fourth but this time the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

To close the top five is Fernando Alonso, his best result yet in the 2021 season – a massive jump up from 14th position in FP1 earlier today.

Sebastian Ocon, Charles Leclerc, Daniel Ricciardo and Lance Stroll complete the sixth, seventh, eighth and nineth spots for FP2 but where has Sergio Perez’s pace gone?

Dropping from third place to 10th in FP2, Perez struggled to keep up with the front runners in the second hour of the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Another calamity in FP2 as Pierre Gasly finished outside of the top ten for the first time this year as he filled 11th spot. Lando Norris also suffered a patchy start to his Portuguese Grand Prix weekend as he finished 12th, four positions down on his eighth-place finish this morning.

George Russell also dropped a few places following this morning’s performance as he finished in 13th behind Norris. Behind the Williams was Yuki Tsunoda, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

To end the first day of the Portuguese GP was the two Haas’ of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin in 18th and 20th, separated by the Williams of Nicholas Latifi who finished in 19th.
