Ash Sutton has continued where he left off from 2020, taking pole position at Thruxton ahead of tomorrow’s BTCC season opener.

Just like the final qualifying of 2020 at Brands Hatch, the drivers were forced to contend with wet conditions around the Thruxton circuit, making for a tough session.

The only incident of qualifying came at the end, as Jade Edwards found herself in the grass during the final runs, suffering damage to the front left of her Honda Civic Type R.

It was a very exciting first qualifying of 2021, with a handful of drivers trading fast laps in the final ten minutes of the session.

Tom Ingram briefly went quickest right at the end of the session, before Sutton’s 1m18.305s lap put the Laser Tools Racing driver on pole.

Starting alongside the reigning-champion for Round 1 tomorrow is BTC’s Josh Cook, who was just 0.053s behind.

Colin Turkington will start from third on the grid, the BMW driver finished 0.362s behind Sutton, Ingram ended qualifying in fourth.

Rory Butcher finished as the top Toyota in fifth, with the second BMW of Tom Oliphant alongside in sixth.

Jake Hill will be left frustrated after only managing to finish seventh, the MB Motorsport driver looked set to end higher up the order before being blocked on his final run by Jason Plato in the last chicane.

Gordon Shedden marks his return to the BTCC with an eighth placed finish, the 42-year-old topped FP2 earlier today.

Ollie Jackson put his Focus ST in ninth and will start on the fifth row with Chris Smiley alongside him.

The start of the 2021 BTCC season has got off to a very close start with an incredible qualifying, and the day of racing tomorrow is anyone’s for the taking.
