Maverick Vinales’ frustrations continued this season as the Yamaha rider toiled in the wet French GP.
Yamaha’s Vinales’ frustrating 2021 campaign continued at last weekend’s French GP in Le Mans. The Yamaha rider started on the front row, he then battled for the lead in the early stages before rain intervened to stop him in his tracks.
Vinales felt that the rain ended his chances of winning: “Today, it was very clear that, if we had dry conditions, I would have had the opportunity to win the race.”
Top Gun said that the feeling he had in the dry was the best since race one in Qatar: “I felt incredible on the bike. I hadn’t had that feeling since the Qatar GP, and I understood very well at that moment that I could win the race.”
It was another challenging and disappointing day for the 26-year-old, even more so when the bike was fast.
After the perfect start in Qatar, Vinales’ championship challenge is faltering. He is acutely aware of that, but he is staying positive as the championship heads to Mugello: “It’s been a while since I did a good start and took the lead on the first lap. We know we have good potential for Mugello.”
The long, flowing nature of the track situated in the Tuscan hills should suit the Yamaha bike. The Spaniard must have a strong weekend if the championship is still on his wish list.
