Boyd to make WEC debut as Scherer tests positive for COVID-19

United Autosports’ ELMS LMP3 champion Wayne Boyd has been drafted in at the 8 Hours of Portimão after Fabio Scherer tested positive for COVID-19.

Full-time FIA WEC driver and Season 9 rookie will not participate at this weekend’s Portimão race following his positive result.

The Swiss driver will not be driving alongside Paul Di Resta and Phil Hanson following his debut victory at the 6 Hours of Spa in May.

In an official statement on Twitter, they said: “United Autosports can confirm that following a positive COVID-19 test result this morning, Fabio Scherer will not be racing for the team during Round 2 of the FIA World Endurance Championship in Portimao.”

With Filipe Albuquerque at the Detroit GP for his IMSA commitments this weekend, and now Scherer unable to race, it will be down to Phil Hanson to defend his lead in the driver’s standings.

In a Twitter reply to another comment, the Leeds-based outfit added:

“Fabio is doing well…he has no symptoms. Rest of the team [are] fine, if a little disappointed.

“Looking forward to welcoming Wayne [Boyd] to our WEC team though.”

Boyd will make his FIA WEC debut for the team after his late draft to the Autodromo Internacional Algarve track.

The race this Sunday will have 11 LMP2s fight for victory at the first of two eight-hour races on the Season 9 calendar.

Last Lap sends their wishes to Fabio Scherer on his recovery.
