BTCC Brands Hatch Indy: Oliphant takes exhilarating win in opening race

Tom Oliphant won Round 7 of the British Touring Car Championship ahead of Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden and pole sitter Daniel Rowbottom.

Off the start, Dan Rowbottom was swamped by Aiden Moffat; teammate Gordon Shedden and a lightning fast Tom Ingram were relegated to 4th by the end of the first lap.

A driver who had a worse start than Rowbottom was Stephen Jelley after being handed a five second time penalty for jumping the start.

Ash Sutton was showing why he is the defending champion throughout the race with multiple crucial overtakes and attacks up and down the field.

Sutton finished 5th at the flag, but with less weight in the car for the next race; he will be a real threat to that race win.

Rowbottom was on a charge after his poor start and he managed to finish third at the end after multiple hard fought battles throughout the race.

By Lap 6, Sutton and Ingram where fighting hard, exchanging paint on virtually every corner before Sutton managed to pull a small gap that gave him enough space to just beat out the EXCELR8 driver to fifth place.

At the front of the pack, Oliphant had managed to pull a 3 second gap to Sheddon by Lap 9, the Team BMW driver managed to keep Shedden behind him but only just, finishing the race just 0.2 seconds in front.

Lap 12 was an awful series of events for Laser Tools’ Aiden Moffat. He dropped four places after he was left out to dry around the outside of Druids by Chris Smiley. He soon managed to gain a couple of the lost places back from Josh Cook and Jack Goff, but settled for P8 at the flag.

Through Lap 13 to 21, the main point of interest was Shedden’s pursuit of Oliphant as he was determined to get that first win of the season on the board. The gap started at just over three seconds on lap 13, and was down to 0.8 of a second by the end of the 21st lap.

The only rookie on the grid, Rick Parfitt, had a brilliant battle with Team HARD driver Nic Hamilton. He sent a brave move up the inside that didn’t quite work out as he ended up facing the wrong way at Druids.

There were no DNFs by the end of the 21 laps at Brands Hatch Indy.
