George Russell was delighted with his stunning performance in yesterday’s qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Williams’ Russell couldn’t hide his wonderment after his spectacular showing in qualifying. F1’s Mr Saturday once again displayed his incredible one-lap speed to get into Q3 for the first time in a Williams car.
To further highlight his pace, the British driver got through on the medium tyres, beating the Ferrari’s and Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren fair and square.
In a press release, Russell felt that the session was even better than usual: “Qualifying was pretty special; we usually do well on Saturdays, but that was on another level.” The 23-year-old is now looking forward to today’s race after the troubles of the Styrian GP.
“I’m really pleased for the whole team; we’ve managed to keep the momentum going, and this is thoroughly deserved after the struggles of last Sunday. I’m very excited about tomorrow,” he said.
Starting on the medium tyre with a good race pace should keep Russell in contention for that elusive points finish in a Williams.
The 2018 F2 Champion is carrying that confidence into the race; “P9 in any circumstances is a great place to be, but starting on the mediums with a few cars ahead on the soft tyres puts us in a strong position for the race and hopefully gives us a real advantage when it comes to making strategic decisions.”
With Lewis Hamilton signing a contract extension yesterday morning, Russell provided a timely reminder of his talents. A good race could firmly place his name on the top of Toto Wolff’s list for the second Mercedes seat.
