The reigning FIA WEC GT World Champion Nicki Thiim will race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next month in AMR NorthWest’s Vantage GTE.
The Danish works driver will return make his first outing in Season 9’s FIA World Endurance Championship since the 8 Hours of Bahrain last year where he secured his world championship alongside Marco Sorensen.
He returns at the fourth WEC 2021 round with the #98 Aston Martin Racing full-time FIA WEC entry, by AMR NorthWest, in the GTE-Am category.
“I am so happy to be coming back to one of the greatest endurance races in the world with Aston Martin, and as always it’s an honour to represent such a special brand in the big events,” he said ahead of his eighth Le Mans race.
“I have to say thank you to Paul [Dalla Lana] for inviting me to be a part of his NorthWest AMR team, and for giving us a real chance to fight for victory in this year’s race.”
He will be replacing Augusto Farfus for the French classic who has clashing commitments for Hyundai in the Pure ETRC event at the Hungaroring.
“The Vantage is an amazing car to race at Le Mans and with Paul [Dalla Lana] and Marcos [Gomes] we have a team that can be right in the mix.”
Thiim was last in the GTE-Am category in 2014, where he also drove an Aston Martin Vantage GTE.
He secured a class-victory at his debut Le Mans with his Danish teammates David Heinemeier Hansson and Kristian Poulsen.
The 32-year-old has yet to come close to another class-win after finishing on the podium at last year’s race.
“When it became clear that [regular WEC team-mate] Augusto Farfus was not available for the race, Nicki was the obvious replacement,” added Dalla Lana.
“Between Nicki and Marcos we have an incredibly strong line-up.
“The Vantage is a proven quantity at Le Mans, and in the NorthWest AMR team we have built a tight unit of dedicated individuals, many of whom have won this race before and know exactly how to get the job done.
“This feels like a really good shot at the race, and I’m super excited to get down to business at Le Mans.”
Together as a trio, they will be set on claiming the top step of the GTE-Am Le Mans podium on August 21-22 with the reigning honours on TF Sport’s Vantage GTE in 2020.
