Le Mans 24H Test Day: Toyota top incident-filled morning, United Autosports 1-2 in LMP2

The #8 Toyota GAZOO Racing Hypercar topped the time sheets during the morning session of the pre-Le Mans 24 Hours Test Day.

It was a sunlit morning for the first of two sessions on the Test Day, featuring several incidents and the maiden track debut of the Hypercar.

The day hosts opportunity for teams and drivers to test their cars before Free Practice 1 next Wednesday.

Nine Formula E drivers were absent due to their attendance at the Berlin season-finale this weekend.

Seven cars are were involved in incidents during the four-hour session which commenced at 8am local time (9am BST).

A number of Red Flags were deployed throughout, such as when the #86 Porsche suffered a puncture and hit the barriers at the first chicane on the Mulsanne Straight.

The #63 Corvette Racing stopped at the Porsche Curves due to an electrical issue and returned to the pits on a flatbed truck.

Dwight Merriman in the #17 IDEC Sport spun around at the Ford Chicane, getting contact moments later with the #31 Team WRT piloted by Ferdinand Habsburg.

The #38 JOTA LMP2 suffered a left-rear puncture in the hands of Roberto Gonzalez which damaged the bodywork, triggering a FCY on its return to the pits.

Also, the #95 TF Sport was involved in its own incident too when it hit the railings at the first chicane. Driver John Hartshorne walked away uninjured.

Another GTE-Am car which suffered drama was the #777 of Satori Hoshino who hit a tyre wall but recovered after the contact.

In the Hypercar category, the #8 Toyota GAZOO Racing edged the #36 Alpine Elf Matmut with a fastest time of 3m31.263s.

United Autosports occupied first and second (and 13th) spots in LMP2 with their #23 Oreca 07-Gibson setting a fastest time of 3m33.038s and accumulating 38 laps.

The #84 set a best time of 3m42.145s and accumulated 28 laps as the double-amputee crew get to terms with their Oreca at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Porsche were 1-2 in GTE-Pro as the #92 set the best GTE pace at 3m52.901s.

It was Aston Martin Racing’s #98 which topped a 23-car GTE-Am class with a personal best of 3m55.710s and 36 laps completed.
