After a tumultuous week, the worst kept secret in the MotoGP paddock is now out in the wild. Maverick Vinales will race for Aprilia in 2022.
Outgoing Yamaha rider Maverick Vinales has signed a deal to race for the factory Aprilia team in 2022.
The exile ends months of speculation and rumour after his Yamaha relationship spectacularly broke down.
The Spaniard joins the Italian squad as they transition into a complete factory outfit, and they are delighted to hire a rider of Vinales’ calibre.
A statement said: “We are extremely happy to announce that we have signed Maverick Viñales, a very high-level rider and one of the purest talents in the premier category. Our project has now been enriched with the value that Maverick brings.”
Vinales joins his former Suzuki sparring partner Aleix Espargaro.
The Spaniards enjoy a healthy relationship and will extract the best out of each other.
Vinales is a temperamental, often fragile rider, but there is no doubting his speed. He is a proven race-winner with tons of experience and knowledge, which is invaluable for Aprilia.
Overall, Aprilia’s CEO is very excited about Vinales’ impact: “We are honoured to be able to make all of our best skills available to Viñales along with our enthusiasm and our passion. I am confident that, like Aleix, he will embrace this extremely high-potential project.”
Vinales is a former world champion in the lower categories thus entails possibilities between Vinales and Aprilia.
