Turkish GP: Bottas inherits pole after Hamilton’s penalty

Valtteri Bottas benefitted from teammate Lewis Hamilton’s penalty as the Finn starts on pole for tomorrow’s race.

After a tricky start in damp conditions, Hamilton settled and down serenely progressed through the session.

The Brit set a session best 1m22.868s to take provisional pole and limit the damage done by his 10-place penalty due to taking a new internal combustion engine.

Mercedes teammate Bottas will then start from pole tomorrow ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly underlined good sessions by snatching second-row starting spots.

Fernando Alonso continued to impress in the slippery conditions, and he will start from fifth place.

Consequently, Hamilton has a spate of fast cars in his way including the likes of Lando Norris, Sergio Perez, Yuki Tsunoda, Alonso, Leclerc, and Gasly.

George Russell and Esteban Ocon missed out in Q2 as both drivers made errors on the final corner. Carlos Sainz battled tyre warmup issues all session long, and he finished 15th, although he will start from the back because of a power unit penalty.

Mick Schumacher was the star of Q1 as he dragged his Haas car into Q2. Daniel Ricciardo became the shock elimination as the Aussie battled and lacked confidence.
