Milesi enjoyed ‘special’ Toyota Hypercar debut at Bahrain Rookie Test

Recently crowned Season 9 LMP2 Drivers’ Champion Charles Milesi enjoyed his first time behind Toyota’s championship-winning #7 GR010 Hybrid.

Driving in this year’s Season 9 for Team WRT, Milesi took part in the Bahrain Rookie Test earlier today for Toyota GAZOO Racing.

The 20-year-old drove the #7 GR010 Hybrid which won the Hypercar World Championship yesterday at the same time he secured a championship in LMP2.

Having won three consecutive races beginning with his second Le Mans 24 Hours, Milesi earned an invitation to drive a Le Mans Hypercar.

Speaking in a press release, Charles Milesi said: “Getting behind the wheel of the GR010 Hybrid for the first time was very special for me; every endurance driver dreams of driving a car like this.

“I am happy with the job I did.

“In the beginning, I had to adjust to the braking which is different to my LMP2 car (Oreca 07 Gibson), but the team helped me to improve.

“The grip in high-speed corners and the power of the car was new to me, and very impressive.

“I got used to it quite quickly and I am happy with the job I did.

“So it was a good day and when you drive a car like this, you just want to have more.”

He drove in the two-hour morning session with 31 laps completed around the Bahrain International Circuit.

The afternoon session was completed by the #7 regulars Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez.

Milesi’s fastest lap time of a 1m49.636s was eight tenths away from Mike Conway’s best efforts.

It is unlikely Milesi will replace Kazuki Nakajima’s former seat in the team, but the Frenchman got his first taste of working with a top level manufacturer and multiple world championship-winning team.
