Porsche to be a regular feature on DTM grid for first time

Porsche will have a presence in the DTM championship next year, with SSR Performance announcing they will field two 911 GT3 Rs in 2022.

SSR Performance has previously competed in ADAC GT Masters, winning the 2020 title before finishing runner-up in this year’s championship, just six points behind winners Montaplast by land-Motorsport.

The team became the first outfit to ever race a Porsche in DTM after a one-off outing with Michael Ammermüller at the Nürburgring last season, although the race ended in retirement.

But despite failing to finish the race, SSR Performance were excited about the prospects of racing in the series and as a result they have entered two cars for next year’s campaign, meaning for the first time in DTM history Porsche will be a regular feature on the grid.

Speaking about the announcement, SSR Performance’s managing director, Stefan Schlund, said: “For our young company, getting started in DTM is highly significant.

“As a result, it was particularly important for us to get a competitive line-up with two cars on the grid.

“I think that the next weeks and months will be very exciting. There is still a lot of work waiting for us prior to the start of the season at Portimão, but we like challenges.”

The addition of Porsche on the 2022 grid is also a positive step for DTM after the recent withdrawals of some major teams, and ITR’s (DTM organiser) managing director Benedikt Böhme is excited by the way in which next year’s grid is growing.

“The entries from the teams for the 2022 DTM are developing in quite an enjoyable manner,” said Böhme

“We are on a good way to getting to experience an even more exciting season next year.

“Porsche is a legendary sports car brand, SSR Performance is already shining with remarkable titles even as a young team.

“Together, they will be raising the level of competition in DTM and the appeal for the fans.”

At this stage, there is no confirmation as to who will be driving for the team next year.
