Patterson set to partner Moffat at Laser Tools Racing

Dexter Patterson has joined the championship-winning Laser Tools Racing team alongside regular Aiden Moffat for the 2022 BTCC season.

Patterson is set to debut into the British Touring Car Championship after ‘impressing’ during a recent track test at Snetterton.

The 18-year-old will be the youngest driver on the 2022 grid with now-fellow teammate Aiden Moffat setting the bar at 16-years-old in 2013.

“I loved the Infiniti,” said Patterson on his first drive in the Infiniti Q50.

“It is certainly different to the single-seaters that I’m used to.

“It was a bit slippery in the morning session, but as the track dried off in the afternoon we went onto slicks and I was very happy with my lap times.

“The brakes take a bit of getting used to though — in the single-seater I can see when the tyres are about to lock up and I can brake much later.

“So, I’m really looking forward to the extended test sessions pre-season and of course, getting used to the new hybrid car. What an opportunity!”

His karting career includes such winning accolades as the Super 1 National and Formula Kart Stars titles in 2015, the Kartmasters British Grand Prix in the Rotax Mini Max class in the year after, and the Karting World Championship in 2017.

Patterson’s sole car racing experience has been in the 2020 British and Italian F4 championships, followed by British F3 earlier this year.

He will now step up to the BTCC’s top level teams.

Bob Moffat, Team Principal of Laser Tools Racing, added: “I’m very excited by this.

“We’ve always been very appreciative of the support and encouragement that Aiden has received from Laser Tools over quite a number of years now.

Now we can continue with Laser’s ethos of spotting young talent and then developing that talent on the racetrack.

“Dexter is a great fit for us, it’s exactly why Laser Tools got into the BTCC. With our ongoing collaboration with Tony Gilham and Team HARD, we are really looking forward to the 2022 season now.”

BTCC’s new hybrid era will commence at Donington Park on 23-24 April in 2022.
