Daytona 24: Ally Cadillac lead after two hours of intense racing

After two hours of racing, the #48 Ally Cadillac of Kamui Kobayashi led the way in the DPi class at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The 60th edition of this endurance spectacle began in bright and crisp conditions with the sunshine hiding the cooler temperatures.

As a result, establishing the heat and pressure into the tyres was a challenge for all drivers at the start.

At lights out at 6.40 pm GMT, it was a controlled start across the whole field.

The #10 pole-sitting Acura of Filipe Albuquerque lost his front spot on the opening lap after being overtaken by the #5 of Tristan Vautier and #48 Kamui Kobayashi.

Meanwhile, the first LMP3 pit stop was unscheduled by the #54 Core Autosport after suffering a rear left puncture. This was due to low tyre pressures at the start.

The #69 G-Drive Racing was handed a drive-through penalty for a jump-start.

After 11 minutes of racing, the DPi cars lapped the GTD field for the first time.

This flux of traffic allowed Kamui Kobayashi to take the lead with Vautier hung out wide at Turn 1 from the traffic.

In GTD-Pro, an intense duel broke out between both WeatherTech Racing cars: the Mercedes-AMG GT3 #15 of Austin Cindric and the Porsche 911 GT3 #79 of Julien Andauler.

They went side-by-side around the NASCAR bankings, and were kept close from thereon in.

After half an hour, the top three DPi field made their pit stops.

As a result, the #48 of Kobayashi put on a defense on Vautier on fresh rubber.

The first Full Course Yellow period was deployed after the #18 ERA Motorsport of Dwight Merriman hit the tyre barrier at Turn 6.

Approaching the end of the second hour, the #12 of Frankie Montecalvo attempted to avoid a spinning #47 Cetilar Racing at Turn 1.

His Lexus was unable to avoid Roberto Lacorte therefore the rear-left sections of both cars hit each other.

The RCF GT3 nursed its way around to the pitlane for an extensive repair job with damage to the rear-left wheel, suspension and bodywork.

The #48 leads overall whilst PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports hold 1-2 in LMP2.

LMP3 is headed by the #54 CORE Autosport whilst Corvette Racing sit first in GTD-Pro.

The #37 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Winward Racing hold first in the GTD category.
