Daytona 24: #5 car leads at halfway stage after chaotic period

With half of the Daytona 24 now complete, the #5 car leads the way after yet another incident-filled period.

As the temperature began to drop at Daytona, the racing remained as heated as ever in the 10th and 11th hours of the race.

After leaving the pits, the #5 had a brief off at Turn 3 after locking up. Tristan Vautier was quick to recover from the excursion and returned to track without losing too much time.

The drama of the Daytona 24 continued shortly into the 10th hour as the #20 High Class, which had been stretching a commanding lead in LMP2, slid off the track at Turn 1 and hit the barrier.

There was some heavy damage to Fabio Scherer’s car, as he managed to limp back to the pits and miraculously returned to the track shortly after with some quick repairs by the mechanics.

The damage had already been done however, with the #20 dropping to seventh in class and later receiving a stop plus 10s penalty for not fulfilling Emergency Service requirements.

With the green flag being waved, the GTD-Pro cars were quick to commence a tight battle for the lead of the class, with the #2 and #14 cars split by less than 0.3s.

It wasn’t long before the FCY was required once more as the #11 pulled off the track at Turn 6.

This was a short FCY however, with the race quickly resuming six minutes later.

The incidents continued as the Daytona 24 racing resumed, with the #39 car being spun out at the Le Mans Chicane by the #21 AF Corse, which was not investigated by the stewards.

A tight battle then ensued in the DPi class, with the #60 and #02 cars going wheel to wheel with just over 12h30m to go.

Earl Bamber then made an extraordinary move for the overall lead of the race, going around the outside of the #60 car at Turn 5.

The two cars then peeled into the pits making it a race between the pit-crews, with the #60 subsequently moving back ahead in the pit-lane.

Drama struck once again as the #02 made contact with the #31 car, adding insult to injury for the Cadillac team who had already lost the lead of the race in the pits after fighting for it so hard. The #02 car was then punished with a drive through penalty for the incident.

But the #60 was also hit with a drive through penalty for speeding in the pit-lane, meaning the hard work of the Meyer Shank Racing pit-crew was undone in a matter of minutes.

The FCY was then brought out again with 12h20m remaining after an incident at Turn 5 involving the #26 and #20 cars.

At the end of a 15-minute FCY, the #5 JDC Miller quickly stretched out a lead from the #48 car.

Helio Castroneves pulled off a superb move around the outside of the #01 Cadillac to take third overall.

At the halfway point of the Daytona 24, it’s the #5 which leads the DPi class with the #52 leading the LMP2 field.

The #74 car currently leads the LMP3 class, with the #97 WeatherTech Racing car at the front of the GTD-Pro category and the #70 leading the GTD class.

We are already 12 hours and halfway through the Daytona 24, and it’s anyone’s guess to who will be the victors at the chequered flag.
