Daytona 24: Whelen Engineering lead over JDC Miller after 16 hours

After 16 hours of racing at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the #31 Whelen Engineering led the field over the #5 JDC Miller Motorsport in DPi.

The race was taking on the darkness with an array of action in the form of battles and drama in the form of one particular LMP3 car.

Firstly, the temperatures continued to stay at their lowest with minus 1 degrees Celsius.

This caused difficulty for many drivers eager to keep what heat they could retain in their tyres, but perseverance was a given from all of the teams.

The fight for the overall lead continued as the #02 Cadillac Racing asserted their pace thanks to the efforts of both Alex Lynn and Kevin Magnussen.

Heading into the 16th hour of the race, a major incident at Turn 1 occurred when an LMP3 car caught fire after a heavy impact with the barrier.

It was the #7 LMP3 of Forty7 Motorsports as their efforts were put to a stop by this incident, the cause of which is unknown as of yet.

After what was the 13th Full Course Yellow period of the race, things heated up at the sharp end of the field.

The #10 of Will Stevens sent a lunge on Simon Pagenaud’s #60 Acura DPi as they jostled second and third overall.

Pagenaud defended well and Stevens gave space to his fellow Acura.

Eventually the Frenchman retained P2 with a three-second gap ahead of the Briton.

In both GTD classes, there were few moments or incidents which changed their races, but this did not stop the lead fight continuing.

For ‘Pro’, the #9 held the lead by six seconds over the #2 KCMG Porsche.

As for the other class, the #16 Wright Motorsports squad were hanging in the lead with approximately three seconds on their #57 Winward Racing rivals who have remained contenders for the win since the early hours of the race.

The fight for third was also active, featuring Ollie Milroy in the #70 Inception Racing McLaren 720s fending off Spencer Pumpelly in the #44 Magnus Racing.

At the front, the #31 led the way overall, with the #81 on top of LMP2.

The #74 Riley Motorsports is a long way out in front in the L

As for GTD-Pro, it is Pfaff Motorsports and the #70 Inception Racing headed the GTD field.

There have been eight confirmed retirements thus far as the 24 Hours of Daytona enters Hour 17.
