Gotz: ‘it’s probably going to be the biggest year in DTM’

Reigning DTM champion Maximilian Gotz has spoken of his high and positive expectations of the 2022 DTM season.

On the back of his maiden championship win with HRT Mercedes last year, Gotz is now racing with Winward Mercedes.

Speaking during a DTM media talk ahead of the 2022 season on Wednesday, the 36-year-old spoke of his excitement to be going Team Winard, but also of the difficulties surrounding leaving the team you won the championship with.

“It’s nice to be back with the guys from Winward because I’ve known the team for many years and had titles and victories with them so it’s great to be back,” he said.

“Moving from the winning team was not the nicest thing but it was a decision from all of us.

“It was a move that makes sense for us collectively in Mercedes,” he concluded.

Regardless, the German is confident with his vast experience and the season ahead.

He spoke of the importance of coming back strong after a championship win, maintaining that momentum and consistency, and how it provides the “ground for success”.

Speaking fondly on his shock championship triumph, Gotz said he knows it’ll be harder this year but doesn’t believe it will add any pressure.

“I can’t wait to see my car with the #1,” he said.

“I think it’ll be a great mix between young guns and experienced guys.

“[But] there are many things we don’t know yet, but this first test will show the performance of all teams.”

Gotz took part in pre-season testing in late February at Portimão.

This was ahead of official pre-season testing to be held at Hockenheim on 5 and 6 April, followed by Round 1 at Portimão in late April.
