1000M Sebring: #7 Toyota out after dramatic crash into tyre barrier

After four hours of racing, the #8 Toyota has the overall lead at the opening round of the WEC, the 1000 Miles of Sebring.

Upon approaching halfway through the race, it was a mixed bag of action with a series of thrilling fights and duels.

It was also host to a dramatic first crash of this race which caused an extensive Red Flag period.

Into the third hour of the race, Sebastian Priaulx had a stunning defense against Ben Keating’s #33 TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage GTE.

It was Keating’s driving which got the better out of the two for second in GTE-Am.

During this hour, the esteemed eight-time WRC champion Sebastien Ogier began his first WEC race stints after Lilou Wadoux completed her double-stint.

The #46 Porsche of Nicolas Leutwiler had a spin into the tyre barrier at Sunset Bend, causing rear bodywork damage. It was eventually wheeled behind the wall once it reached the pits.

Just before the fourth hour, there was a thrilling LMP2 lead battle between Will Owen of the #22 and Louis Deletraz in the #9 Prema Orlen Team.

Deletraz chased the United Autosports Oreca 07 down and made a pass for the class lead.

After 102 laps of racing, the #88 Dempsey-Proton Racing suffered a right-left puncture. It spun a little afterwards as the Porsche was nursed back to the pits, but had to wait for a gap to cross into the pit-lane.

It was situated on the left side of the circuit, opposite to the pit-entry on the right.

At three-hours and a half of racing, a red flag was deployed after Jose Maria Lopez in the #7 hit the barrier after tagging with the #88.

Shortly afterwards, on his way to recovery, he crashed into Turn 14 and his GR010 Hybrid was put upside-down after losing the ability to steer from the damage incurred.

A red flag lasting 35 minutes took the race up to and past its halfway point.

The #8 Toyota was at the overall lead, and Prema Orlen Team held P1 in LMP2.

Corvette Racing was first in GTE-Pro until and during the red flag as NorthWest AMR led in the GTE-Am class.
