1000M Sebring: Alpine and United Autosports dominant for opening 2 hours

After two hours of racing, the #36 Alpine Elf Team has the overall lead at the opening round of the WEC, the 1000 Miles of Sebring.

Sebring was hot and humid ahead of approximately 268 laps of racing.

The 1000 Miles of Sebring marked the beginning of the 10th season of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Speaking of the rolling start, it was intense and competitive across all classes, particularly at the very front of the 36-car pack.

The #83 of Nicklas Nielsen was not quite able to compete with the pace of the #22 United Autosports of Filipe Albuquerque who got into P2 past the #708 Glickenhaus of Olivier Pla.

Their battle was short-lived after Pla got back into second overall.

On the opening laps, it was a strong stint from Matthieu Vaxiviere in the Alpine who extended his lead up to 20 seconds before the first pit stop.

At the start, the #83 attempted to hold off Paul Di Resta in the sister United Autosports LMP2 but was eventually overtaken by the 21st lap.

Josh Pierson, who took over after a stint, made his official race debut at 16-years, 1 month and 4 days old in the #23.

Toyota redeemed themselves after qualifying struggles with a showing of strong race pace at the start, charging their way through the pack and ahead of the LMP2s.

In GTE-Pro, the battle was on between Porsche and Corvette Racing – and was brought together with both teams ensuring they manage the tyres with the high track temperatures.

Fabio Scherer of the #34 LMP2 was climbing up the order since starting at the back, due to a crash in qualifying yesterday.

This was just until the car started experiencing electronic reliability woes 1-hour and 30 minutes into the race.

Esteban Gutierrez who took over after Scherer continued to experience such woes, thus pitted for a seven-minute ECU replacement.

At the two-hour point, Alpine were leading by over 30 seconds over the two Toyotas, followed by Glickenhaus.

LMP2 was being lead by the #22 United Autosports ahead of the #23.

In GTE-Pro, the two Porsches led the way as GTE-Am was fronted by the #98 NorthWest AMR.
