Thiim set to make DTM debut with T3 Motorsport

Nicki Thiim, a two-time WEC Champion and son of former DTM Champion Kurt Thiim, will make his debut in the series with T3 Motorsport.

The Danish driver will drive a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO this year with the championship getting underway at the end of April at Portimao.

The 32-year-old currently sits at the top of the standings in the LM-GTE Am class of the WEC after claiming the victory at Sebring on Friday with the #98 NorthWest AMR team.

But speaking on the announcement, Thiim said having the chance to join the DTM grid is a dream come true.

“DTM! What shall I say? The biggest dream of my career is coming true,” he said in a press release.

“I grew up with DTM. During breakfast, during lunch and dinner, there always was DTM on TV and my dad was my hero, of course.

“It has always been clear that DTM was my DNA and that it has always just been about racing there.

“And now, having made it with T3 Motorsport after 20 years, the occasional detour and some title wins, absolutely is something special.”

Thiim’s initial WEC success came in 2016, when he won the FIA WEC GT World Championship with Aston Martin Racing.

He later doubled his title success in the 2019-20 season, taking the overall victory in the same class with Aston Martin.

Jens Feucht, the Team Principal of T3, said the Dane’s success in sportscars will only bring good results for himself and the team as the 2022 campaign gets underway.

“The fact that Thiim as a two-time world champion is giving us his confidence is a real honour for us,” he commented in a press release.

“He is highly motivated, he is a particularly likable driver, has clear ambitions and is keen to be in contention at the front of the field, just as we are.

“Signing Thiim is the next big step in the still brief history of our team.”
